Fence Installation in Rio Dell, CA

Fencing for residential Rio Dell, Scotia-side lots, and the rural parcels along the Eel River and Avenue of the Giants.

Rio Dell sits where the 101 meets the Avenue of the Giants, right on the Eel River. It's a small town (about 3,400 people) with its older downtown stepping down toward the river and newer residential spreading back up the hill. Across the bridge is Scotia, the former Pacific Lumber company town. Between the two, we cover a corridor that's equal parts small-town residential, river-adjacent rural, and forest-edge wildland interface. Every one of those site types takes a slightly different fence spec.

The Eel River is the defining feature here. Low-lying lots on the Dinsmore Avenue side or along Wildwood Avenue can flood in big winters; lots up on the Painter Street / Humboldt Avenue hillside don't. We set posts differently depending on which side of that line a property is on.

Fence types popular in Rio Dell

Redwood privacy and shadowbox: the default for residential Rio Dell. Smaller-town lots, mature yards, and the occasional creek-adjacent property all fit wood well.

Chain link: common on the larger rural-residential parcels south of town and on working properties along the river. A galvanized chain link perimeter at 4, 6 ft covers acreage at a price residential wood can't match.

Ranch and ag fence: the ranches between Rio Dell and Weott are old-growth country working farmland. Field fence, high-tensile, split rail, and heavy gate hardware are the standard spec. See our agriculture fencing page.

Forest-edge fencing. Properties backing Humboldt Redwoods State Park or other protected forest need setback from root zones, fire-wise material selection near structures, and sometimes wildlife-aware gate hardware. We've done enough of these to know what questions to ask before quoting.

Permits: City of Rio Dell

Rio Dell is an incorporated city (not unincorporated Humboldt County) so the city handles fence permitting. The rules are fairly standard: front-yard fences cap in the 3.5, 4 ft range, side and rear can go to 6 ft without a permit, above 6 ft needs a building permit, and corner-lot sight distance applies. For parcels on the river we also check floodplain overlay before digging.

Where we cover in the Rio Dell corridor

  • Downtown Rio Dell (Wildwood Avenue): small-town residential
  • Painter Street / Humboldt Avenue hillside: residential above the floodplain
  • Eagle Prairie / Belleview: rural-residential
  • Scotia: across the bridge, company-town legacy residential and some light commercial
  • South along 101 toward Weott and Myers Flat: ranch and forest-edge
  • Avenue of the Giants properties: forest-interface, wildland-aware spec

Rio Dell fence FAQs

Do you work in both Rio Dell and Scotia?

Yes. Rio Dell is our primary service point for that stretch of the Eel River, and we regularly cross the bridge into Scotia as well. The two towns share infrastructure but have separate histories (Scotia is the former Pacific Lumber company town) and we install fences on both sides.

Can you build fences on river-adjacent lots?

Yes, and we build them differently than on dry inland ground. Eel River floodplain parcels need post footings that can handle saturation cycles. We use deeper footings, drainage detail at the post base, and in some sections post material that can ride out a flood without heaving. We'll tell you honestly if a particular run is likely to need rebuild attention after a major flood year.

Does Rio Dell have different fence permit rules than unincorporated county?

Rio Dell is an incorporated city (separate from unincorporated Humboldt County), so the City of Rio Dell has its own planning rules. Front yards typically cap around 3.5, 4 ft; side and rear yards are generally permitted up to 6 ft without a building permit. We confirm with the city on any job inside city limits.

Can you fence properties bordering Humboldt Redwoods State Park?

Yes. Lots on the forest edge near the Avenue of the Giants need some extra thought: wildland-interface considerations, setback from protected trees, and sometimes fire-wise material choices. We walk the site and flag any of those issues up front.

Do you handle rural and ranch fencing south of Rio Dell?

Yes: the stretch from Rio Dell down through Weott, Myers Flat, and on toward Garberville has plenty of working ranches and rural-residential parcels we service. Field fence, perimeter chain link, and ranch gates are common asks.
