Fence Installation in Arcata, CA

From flat Arcata Bottom lots to steep Fickle Hill installs, and from Cal Poly rental properties to custom Bayside homes. We build fences across Arcata's full range of terrain and site conditions.

Arcata is a different fence market than its neighbor Eureka. It's smaller (about 18,000 people) but denser with renters thanks to Cal Poly Humboldt, and it spreads across a wider range of terrain. You can drive from the flat Arcata Bottom on the bay side, up through the Plaza and the Creamery District, and be on a steep Fickle Hill lot with redwood canopy overhead in fifteen minutes. We build fences on all of it.

Arcata's climate shares the coastal fog and marine air of Eureka, but with more tree canopy, especially in Bayside, Sunny Brae, and up Fickle Hill Road. That canopy means higher humidity around your fence at ground level, slower drying between rains, and a bigger hardware-corrosion risk. It also means shadier sites where redwood and cedar stay damp longer than they would on a sunny Fortuna lot. We spec for it: elevated post setting, stainless or hot-dip fasteners, and species selection that can handle the shade.

Fence types popular in Arcata

Redwood privacy is the default for most residential work. Shadowbox for wind-exposed lots near the bay; full-privacy dog-ear for smaller interior lots. In the Bayside neighborhood especially, we install a lot of horizontal-board redwood because the architectural style tends modern-rustic.

Vinyl is popular with Arcata landlords and rental property owners, specifically because it doesn't require staining, sealing, or board replacement between tenants. We've installed vinyl privacy fence at rental properties in Sunny Brae, Valley West, and off Samoa Boulevard many times.

Chain link with privacy slats: Glen C.'s project (his review is below) is a great example of this. Arcata lots often don't have attached garages, so off-street parking security becomes a real need, which is where rolling chain link gates with privacy slats come in. See the pattern all over Valley West and along the 299 corridor.

Automatic driveway gates are popular with Fickle Hill and upper Bayside properties where the driveway is long and steep. Our automatic gates page covers swing, slide, rolling, and solar options.

Deer and ag fencing: the Arcata Bottom and Mad River bottomlands still have working ag parcels, plus plenty of home growers who want deer exclusion around gardens. Six- to eight-foot deer fence is a frequent Arcata ask, see our agriculture fencing page.

Permits and environmental review in Arcata

The City of Arcata has standard fence code with a couple of Arcata-specific notes:

  • Front yard fences up to 4 ft permit-exempt (slightly more generous than Eureka's 3.5 ft).
  • Side and rear fences up to 6 ft without a permit; taller needs a building permit.
  • Corner lots have visibility triangles at street and driveway intersections.
  • Environmental review: Arcata has a stronger focus than most Humboldt cities on setbacks from native vegetation and creek corridors (Janes Creek, Jolly Giant Creek, Campbell Creek, and the Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary). Fence lines near these trigger additional review.
  • Creek setbacks affect where posts can be dug. We take this into account during the estimate rather than finding out mid-install.

Hillside fencing in Arcata

Sunny Brae, Fickle Hill, upper Bayside, and parts of Westwood all have grades that can make a standard level fence infeasible. On slopes we either step the fence (level panels dropped stepwise down the grade (cleaner look with small triangular gaps at the base) or rack the fence (panels that angle continuously along the slope) no gaps, more complex build). Which one we recommend depends on the slope percent and what you prefer aesthetically. We walk the site, shoot the slope, and talk through both before quoting.

★★★★★ Verified Google review

“Humboldt Fencing installed a 20-ft rolling chain link gate for me at my home in Arcata last week. I now have a secure off-street parking area and could not be happier with the gate and with Humboldt Fencing. I requested a quote for this gate and received it by email within a day. Scheduled the install for first week of June. Price was reasonable for a two-day job, posts set on day one, gate installed two days later after concrete had set. Ann in the office was always responsive to questions, all the crew guys were a pleasure to work with, offering suggestions for maintenance and tips to keep the hardware working right over the years. Happy with the work and the hardware. Works great, and would recommend this company.”

Arcata fence FAQs

Can you build on a hillside in Sunny Brae or Fickle Hill?

Yes. Hillside lots are a big share of our Arcata work. We have two approaches: step the fence (level panels dropped stepwise down the grade (cleaner look, small triangular gaps at the base) or rack the fence (panels that angle continuously to follow the slope) no gaps, more complex build). Which we recommend depends on the slope percent and the aesthetic you want. We walk the site, shoot the slope, and talk it through before quoting.

Do you install fences near the Arcata Marsh or along creek corridors?

Yes, but these sites need coordination. Arcata has stronger environmental-review standards than most Humboldt cities around native vegetation setbacks and creek buffers (Janes Creek, Jolly Giant Creek, Campbell Creek, and the Arcata Marsh). If your fence line runs near one of these, we flag it during the estimate and coordinate with the City before digging anything to confirm no additional review applies.

What fence type is best for a rental property in Arcata?

Vinyl, most of the time. Rental properties near Cal Poly Humboldt and in Sunny Brae, Valley West, and along Samoa Blvd see heavy wear between tenants. Vinyl doesn't need staining, sealing, or board replacement, so the maintenance overhead across multiple tenancies is dramatically lower than redwood. The up-front cost is higher; the total-cost-of-ownership over 15 years is usually lower.

Can you install rolling chain link gates like the one in Glen C.'s review?

Yes, that's a project type we do often in Arcata, specifically because Arcata lots frequently don't have attached garages, so off-street parking security matters. A 20-ft rolling chain link gate (the size Glen had installed) secures an off-street parking area without eating up interior swing clearance. We can add privacy slats, automate it, or leave it manual depending on the site.

Do you pull City of Arcata fence permits?

Yes, when a permit is needed. Arcata allows front yard fences up to 4 ft without a permit (slightly more generous than Eureka's 3.5 ft), side and rear up to 6 ft, and requires a building permit above 6 ft. Corner lots have visibility triangles. Creek-adjacent and marsh-adjacent lots may trigger additional review.

How does Arcata's tree canopy affect fence life?

Shade means longer drying time between rains, which means fences in Bayside, Sunny Brae, and up Fickle Hill stay damp longer than fences on open lots in Fortuna. That's a mild penalty on wood and a meaningful penalty on hardware: which is why we use stainless or hot-dip fasteners on every Arcata job, and why we specify elevated post setting (galvanized steel embedded, wood post mounted above grade) on high-value installs under heavy canopy.
