Fence Installation in Fortuna, CA
Humboldt Fence Company is based right here, our yard and office sit at {site.address.street}, just off the 101. Twenty-plus years of fences in the Eel River Valley, with local crews who know the soil, the weather, and the permit office by name.
We've been serving Fortuna and the broader Eel River Valley since 2002, which means more than twenty years of permits, installs, repairs, and storm rebuilds all within a ten-minute drive of our shop. When you call us for a Fortuna fence quote, the person picking up the phone knows your street, knows the soil type, and probably knows whether the section of 101 frontage you're on is city or county.
That local base matters more than it sounds. We know where the Eel River floodplain starts and how to set posts in ground that floods every few winters. We know which Rohnerville and Hillside lots sit on rocky hardpan that needs rock drilling, and which Bottoms-area properties have the soft river-silt that needs deeper footings. Fortuna is where we trained up and where we still do some of our biggest jobs, including the 10-acre solar plant perimeter Rich Brandt's team hired us for (his review is below).
Fence types we install in Fortuna
Residential. Most Fortuna homes end up with redwood, either shadowbox for airflow-forward yards or full-privacy dog-ear for smaller lots. We install a fair amount of vinyl in the Newburg area and in newer subdivisions where HOAs want low-maintenance fencing. Chain link is still the default in the flatter neighborhoods near 12th Street and out along Rohnerville Road.
Dairy and agriculture. Fortuna's east side and the broader Eel River Valley are dairy country, Humboldt's historic barn-and-pasture landscape. We do perimeter field fence, high-tensile wire runs, and gate installations for the dairies, cattle operations, and smaller ranches from Hydesville through Alton. See our agriculture fencing page for the specs.
Commercial along 101. The 101 corridor through Fortuna runs from Pedrazzini Avenue south through the Redwood Village business district. We handle commercial chain link, ornamental iron entry gates, dumpster enclosures, and security fencing for businesses along that stretch. Industrial sites (including the Fortuna solar plant in Rich Brandt's review) get the same engineered footings and code-compliant hardware as anything else we install.
Floodplain considerations. A chunk of Fortuna, especially the Bottoms, parts of Rohner Park, and low-lying sections near the Eel, sits in the designated floodplain. Fences in the floodplain zone need post footings that can survive saturation-and-drainage cycles without heaving. We set those posts differently than we would on dry ground, and we'll tell you honestly if a section of fence is going to need rebuild attention after a major flood year.
Permits and local code in Fortuna
The City of Fortuna has its own planning rules that differ from unincorporated Humboldt County. Inside city limits:
- Front yard fences are limited to 42 inches (3.5 ft) without special approval. This catches a lot of homeowners who want a 4-ft picket fence out front, the spec has to come down.
- Side and rear yard fences are allowed up to 6 ft without a permit; above 6 ft needs a building permit.
- Corner lots have visual-clearance triangles. The triangle starts 25 ft from the curb line in each direction; inside it, nothing can exceed 42 inches.
- Driveways have a 10-ft clear-view triangle on each side of the driveway approach, easy to miss on a scaled site plan, which is why we measure it on site rather than relying on the owner's recollection.
When a permit is required, we pull it as part of the install.
Neighborhoods we serve in Fortuna
Our crews are in Fortuna basically every week. Recent work across:
- Rohner Park and central Fortuna: redwood privacy, mixed residential
- Rohnerville and Hillside: larger lots, ag + residential mix, hillside installs
- Fortuna Bottoms: floodplain-aware post setting, ag fencing
- Hydesville and Alton: on the edge of town, ranch and dairy work
- Pedrazzini / Redwood Village: commercial frontage along 101
- Newburg / Carson Park: newer residential, more vinyl demand
- Ferndale Road / Loleta side: we cross over into Ferndale and Loleta regularly

“Reasonable price. The guys at Humboldt Fence were great on my project. I had a 10-acre solar plant we built in Fortuna. Tanner and his crew were great, professional, on time and did great work. Russ the owner was very helpful and worked with our ever-changing schedule and the weather to install a beautiful secure fence and gates. Thanks guys, definitely use you next time we are up here.”

Fortuna fence FAQs
How long does it take to get a fence estimate in Fortuna?
We're based here, so Fortuna estimates are typically scheduled within 3, 5 business days of your first call, faster in slower seasons. Because our yard is on State Highway 36, we can often swing by the same day for a quick look if the schedule lines up.
Can you build fences on properties in the Eel River floodplain?
Yes. A portion of Fortuna (the Bottoms, parts of Rohner Park, and lower-elevation parcels near the river) sits in the Eel River floodplain. We set posts on those sites using deeper footings and drainage detailing so the fence survives the saturation/drainage cycles without heaving. We'll tell you up front if a given section is likely to need rebuild attention after a major flood year.
Do you pull City of Fortuna fence permits?
Yes, when a permit is required we pull it as part of the job. For reference: front yard fences inside city limits are capped at 42 inches without special approval; side and rear yards can go up to 6 feet permit-exempt; anything taller than 6 feet needs a building permit; and corner lots have a 25-foot visual-clearance triangle where nothing can exceed 42 inches.
What's the best fence style for Fortuna's climate?
Fortuna gets more sun than the coast and less fog than Eureka, so dimensionally stable materials like redwood and vinyl both do well here. For wind-prone lots (anywhere out near the river or on the open hillsides) shadowbox redwood outperforms full-privacy wood because the alternating boards let wind pass through rather than fighting it.
Do you handle commercial and industrial fencing in Fortuna?
Yes. The 101 corridor through Fortuna (Pedrazzini, Redwood Village, the business strip north of Newburg) has a steady rotation of commercial chain link, dumpster enclosures, gated storage, and ornamental iron frontages we've done. We've also completed larger industrial scopes, including a 10-acre solar plant perimeter, which Rich Brandt reviewed above.
What neighborhoods do you cover in Fortuna?
All of them: Rohner Park, central Fortuna, Rohnerville, Hillside, the Bottoms, Newburg, Carson Park, Pedrazzini, and the ag parcels east of town toward Hydesville and Alton. We also cross into Loleta and Ferndale Road regularly.
