Fence Installation in McKinleyville, CA
Bigger lots, coastal wind, and the Mad River flats: McKinleyville fencing needs a different spec than downtown Eureka, and we build it accordingly.
McKinleyville sits on the flats north of the Mad River, between the Pacific coastline and the redwoods of the Arcata Bottom. It's the largest unincorporated community in Humboldt County, no mayor, no city council, just the McKinleyville Community Services District, and that unincorporated status shows up in the permit process, the neighborhood character, and the size of the lots. Most McKinleyville parcels are meaningfully bigger than what you'd find in Eureka or Arcata, which means fence runs here tend to be longer, ag-edge fence is still common on the northern edge of town, and residential privacy fencing often has to cover 300, 800 linear feet.
The climate is coastal (marine layer, fog, and cool summers) but the Mad River mouth creates a wind gap that funnels ocean air straight into Ocean Ranch, Fisher Ranch, and the subdivisions on the west side of town. We've rebuilt enough fences out there after January storms to know that hardware spec and style choice matter more than they do five miles inland.
Fence types popular in McKinleyville
Shadowbox redwood is our most-recommended style for the exposed-to-ocean lots. Wind passes through the alternating boards rather than loading up on the posts. On sheltered inland lots, full-privacy redwood is fine.
Vinyl has grown fast in newer McKinleyville subdivisions (Fisher Ranch, Ocean Ranch, some of the builds off Central Avenue) specifically because HOAs like the uniform look and homeowners like the zero-maintenance spec. Salt air doesn't bother vinyl. See our vinyl fencing page for details.
Chain link is the default on the bigger rural- residential lots on the north and east sides of town. A 300-ft galvanized chain link perimeter is a fraction of the cost of wood at the same length, and on those size lots it reads fine.
Agriculture and ranch fence still shows up regularly north of McKinleyville and out along Fieldbrook Road, working parcels, horse properties, and small hobby farms. See our agriculture fencing page.
Permits: McKinleyville is unincorporated
Because McKinleyville isn't an incorporated city, fence permits go through Humboldt County Planning & Building, not a city planning office. The rules are somewhat more permissive than incorporated Eureka or Arcata:
- Residential fences under 6 ft are typically permit-exempt.
- Fences taller than 6 ft need a zoning clearance or permit.
- Parcels within the coastal zone may require a coastal development permit, common on the west side of town near the bluffs.
- Corner lots still have sight-distance requirements at intersections; those apply countywide.

McKinleyville fence FAQs
Does McKinleyville require fence permits?
McKinleyville is unincorporated Humboldt County, so the County Planning & Building Department handles permits here rather than a city planning office. Most residential fences under 6 ft are permit-exempt; anything taller or anything in the coastal zone may require a zoning clearance or coastal permit. We pull whatever's required as part of the install.
What fence type handles the wind coming off the Mad River mouth?
Shadowbox redwood is our default for the exposed lots in Ocean Ranch, Fisher Ranch, and anywhere close to the coast. Full-privacy dog-ear fence on an exposed McKinleyville lot catches a lot of wind and tears itself apart over time. The airflow through a shadowbox fence lets the wind pass without putting all the load on the posts.
Can you build on the larger McKinleyville lots?
Yes, McKinleyville lots tend to be larger than Eureka or Arcata lots, which is part of why the town attracts people. We regularly install 300, 800 ft residential perimeter fence lines here, plus ag-edge fence on the working parcels north of town.
Do you install fences in Ocean Ranch, Fisher Ranch, or Central McKinleyville?
Yes, all of them. Those subdivisions have some HOA rules around fence style and height on street-facing sides. We'll review the covenants with you before quoting so the design clears the HOA on the first submission.
Do you install along the Hammond Trail?
Yes. Properties backing the Hammond Trail often want specific fence heights and setbacks to preserve trail-side views or block them off for privacy. Both are fine. We'll detail the plan to fit.
