Ornamental Iron

Ornamental Iron Fence Installation in Humboldt County, CA

Custom-fabricated iron fencing and gates for estates, Victorian homes, and commercial entrances. Powder-coated, galvanized, and rated for coastal conditions.

Ornamental iron is the fence material that says "this is a serious property." Estate perimeters, formal entries, historic Victorian homes, commercial frontages, the Carson Mansion neighborhood in Eureka, anywhere the architecture calls for something more formal than wood or chain link, iron is usually the answer. Done right, it reads timeless. Done wrong (with a cheap powder coat or undersized posts) it rusts out in five years and looks worse than the day it went in.

We install ornamental iron fencing across Humboldt County in both standard catalog styles and custom-fabricated work for historic properties. Every install is either hot-dip galvanized-and-powder-coated mild steel or powder-coated aluminum, no bare painted-steel imports, no cosmetic-only finishes.

Why ornamental iron works on the North Coast

Iron's biggest advantage over wood in coastal Humboldt is that it doesn't rot, check, or warp. Its biggest risk is rust, but modern iron fencing solves that problem two ways: either a hot-dip galvanized steel core followed by a premium powder coat (dual corrosion protection), or aluminum construction that can't rust at all. Aluminum is lighter and costs a little more per linear foot; steel is heavier and more substantial. Either works on the coast when spec'd correctly.

The second advantage is wind performance. Iron fences have open panels, wind passes through the pickets rather than loading up the entire panel as it does on a solid wood or vinyl fence. On exposed Eureka, Trinidad, or Crescent City lots, that's meaningful: a 6-ft ornamental iron fence holds up to winter storms that would take down a 6-ft vinyl privacy fence on the same site.

Styles we install

Straight-top picket. Clean, contemporary, most common style. Square or round top rails with vertical pickets. Height typically 4, 6 ft.

Finial-top picket. Classic wrought-iron look with decorative finials (spear, ball, fleur-de-lis, Gothic point) at the top of each picket. Fits Victorian and traditional architecture.

Scalloped. Top rail curves between posts rather than running straight across. Softer, more residential profile.

Decorative-panel / scroll. Mid-panel scroll work or decorative medallions between pickets. Used on higher-end residential and commercial frontages.

Estate-style. Taller panels (7, 8 ft) with decorative elements and heavier post sizing. For large properties where the iron fence is an architectural statement.

Historic reproduction. Custom-fabricated to match existing period hardware, specific finial profiles, scroll patterns, panel dimensions. For properties in the Carson Mansion area, along Second Street in Eureka, and throughout Ferndale's Victorian Village.

Iron gates

Every iron fence install we do includes custom gates sized to their openings. Options:

  • Walk gates: 3, 4 ft wide, matching picket style, decorative or simple hardware
  • Drive gates (manual): 10, 16 ft wide, single or dual leaf, heavy hinges sized to the gate weight
  • Automatic driveway gates: same fabrication, plus motor, keypad, and operator. See our automatic gates page
  • Pedestrian garden gates: decorative walk gates within a garden wall or between property sections

Cost and timing

Ornamental iron pricing depends on whether you're going with a standard catalog style or custom-fabricated work, historic matching, estate-style, decorative scroll panels. Walk gates and drive gates (manual or automatic with operator and access control) are priced separately. Every quote is itemized after an on-site walk-through, request a free estimate.

Install timing is typically 1, 3 weeks from the start on site. Custom fabrication adds 3, 6 weeks of shop time before we break ground.

Ornamental iron FAQs

How is ornamental iron different from wrought iron?

Historically, wrought iron was forge-worked from a specific low-carbon iron alloy by blacksmiths. Modern "ornamental iron" is made from welded mild steel or hollow aluminum, powder-coated to look like traditional wrought iron at a fraction of the cost and with far better corrosion resistance. We install both mild steel (strongest, slightly more maintenance) and aluminum (lighter, zero corrosion, slightly more expensive).

Does ornamental iron rust on the Humboldt coast?

Not when it's spec'd correctly. We use hot-dip galvanized steel under the powder coat (dual corrosion protection) or aluminum. Powder coat quality matters, cheap imports fail within 5, 7 years on the coast. Our installs come with manufacturer warranties on the coating, typically 10, 20 years depending on the product line.

What styles of ornamental iron do you install?

Traditional picket (straight-top or finial-top), scalloped, decorative scroll panels, estate-style (taller panels with decorative elements), historic reproductions to match Victorian or Italianate architecture, and modern minimalist (flat-top, clean horizontals). For historic properties we custom-fabricate to match existing hardware.

How much does ornamental iron cost?

Pricing depends on whether it's a standard catalog style or custom-fabricated work (historic matching, estate-style panels, decorative scroll). Walk gates and drive gates are priced separately and depend on size, operator, and custom detailing. Every quote is itemized after an on-site walk-through, request a free estimate or call (707) 822-9511.

Can you match historic iron work on older properties?

Yes. For properties in the Carson Mansion neighborhood, Old Town Eureka, and Ferndale's historic district, we work with fabricators who can replicate period-specific profiles: including finial styles, scroll patterns, and custom panel dimensions. Bring a photo or samples of what you're matching.

Do I need a permit for an ornamental iron fence?

Usually yes: most cities require permits for any fence over 6 ft, and ornamental iron front-yard installs in historic districts require design review. We handle permit submittals and walk designs through review boards as part of the install.
